
SHRI SANTANU BANDYOPADHYAY
Shri Santanu Bandyopadhyay belongs to an illustrious family of musicians from the rare Vishnupur gharana of Bengal. He is the son of Sangeetacharya Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, grandson of the famous Satyakinkar Bandyopadhyay and present torch-bearer of the gharana and is rapidly rising into the ranks of the pre-eminent vocalists of India today. Santnau holds gold-medals from the Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta and from the Pune Bharat Gayan Samaj for excellence of performance. He is a regular artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan (T.V.) and received a golden tanpura for standing first in the All India Radio competition (Khayal) in 1983. He has performed in conferences all over India, in venues such as Calcutta, Delhi, Patna and Benares and has toured the U.S. thrice in the last few years, performing at Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, New Jersey and St. Louis. Santanu's singing is characterized by spiritual intensity, technical virtuosity and a restrained sweetness.
Santanu will be accompanied on tabla by Shri Samir Kumar Dey, a senior disciple of Shri Samir Chatterjee and on harmonium by Smt. Amrita Banerji, a resident-member of the Sri Aurobindo Center of Los Angeles.
