Mother's Prayer of Nov. 28, 1913

Mother Divine, grant that today may bring to us a completer consecration to Thy Will, a more integral gift of ourselves to Thy Work, a more total forgetfulness of self, a greater illumination, a purer love. Grant that in a communion growing ever deeper, more constant and entire, we may be united always more and more closely to Thee and become Thy servitors worthy of Thee. Remove from us all egoism, root out all petty vanity, greed and obscurity. May we be all ablaze with Thy divine Love; make us Thy torches in the world.

Sri Aurobindo on Work:

All work done for the Divine from poetry and art and music to carpentry or baking or sweeping a room should be made perfect even in its smallest external detail as well as in the spirit in which it is done; for only then is it an altogether fit offering.

Questions:

  1. How often did I remember the Mother during the work?
(The aim is to remember the Mother constantly and see that it is She to whom the work is being offered. It helps to imagine Mother's smiling face receiving work done well. )
  2. How effortless was the work?
(The greater the ease the more the Divine's influence on the being and the work.)
  3. How critical was my work about others and the work to be done?
(This is a deterrent to the work and to individual progress.)
  4. Was I in a social mode?
(To be social during work is moving away from the Divine consciousness. In Mother's words, "Let us work as we pray, for indeed work is the body's best prayer to the Divine.)
  5. Was it done in the right spirit?
(The answer, even though "no", helps to intensify the aspiration for perfection of work.)
