Music concert - Dhrupad Vocal : The Dhruvapada (Dhrupad) style of music came into being in the 14th. C., after the extinction of the post-vedic 'prabandha' style of music. The former was too rigid and hence became extinct. The latter had comparatively more scope in imagination and rhythm, though it also adhered to a rigid structure. Due to this and its extreme purity and asceticism of rendition, it became unpopular as well. Instead, the present-day Khayal form replaced the Dhrupad. Among the few schools of Dhrupad that remain today, the Dagar Bani has been carried down by the Dagar family through 19 generations. Originating in Hindu roots, with Pt. Mangal Das Pandey as the forerunner of this style, there was later an Islamic conversion in the time of Mohammad Shah Rangeele when the Dagar title was assumed.
Smt. Ashoka Dhar (Nandy) is an initiate of the Dagar Bani Gharana and is a premier student of Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar (a 19th. generation doyen in this field). Smt Dhar has been teaching at the Dhrupad Sangeet Ashram in Calcutta, India for many years. (This Ashram was founded on the auspicious day of Sri Aurobindo's Birthday, on 15th. Aug., 1975). Smt. Dhar has travelled world-wide and won the prestigious Suromani award. She will present Dhrupad and Dhamar at the Center and will be accompanied on the Pakhavaj by her son, Rishabh Dhar, who is also a student of the same Gharana. It is his debut concert in the U.S.
We are grateful to Dr. Parson and all volunteers for helping out in Mother's work.

Durga Puja : The Sri Aurobindo Center of Los Angeles will have a booth at the Puja. Matah Durge was a much loved goddess, a power that Sri Aurobindo had invoked during his revolutionary days. She rides the lion and destroys the buffalo-demon. The tenth day is the day of Victory when all rejoice for the triumph of Truth over Falsehood.
